THE SONGWRITER’S TOOLKIT™ COURSE (SCROLL DOWN TO ### FOR ENROLMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR CORRESPONDENCE COURSE)

Available in Johannesburg (Emmerentia), Pretoria (Capital Park), Durban, Soweto (Funda Centre) and Cape Town (District 6). Courses are subject to demand – we need a minimum of 10 students to run a course.

Courses are taught from the second week of each school term.

REQUIREMENTS, COSTS, MATERIALS, AND DIRECTIONS

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a basic knowledge of grammar (e.g. the ability to identify verbs, nouns, adverbs etc.), and preferably have basic skills on guitar or piano/keyboard. Non-instrumentalists, who would like to write lyrics only, need to team up with an instrumentalist, which he/she can source either from within the course, or from outside. You will write two songs during the course, which need to be executed either as 1. a live performance by yourself or someone else, or 2. a recording of yourself or someone else.

COSTS AND PAYMENT

You have the option settling the fees in two instalments of R975 each. The first R975 is payable upfront as a non-refundable deposit to secure your space 7 days before commencement of the course (spaces are limited), into the following bank account:

Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Your space is only secured once you make your payment. The course only accommodates 12 – if it’s full you’ll go on a waiting list for the next one.

The remaining R975 will is payable by week 5 .

MATERIALS

You need to get the following:

– A Roget’s Thesaurus (published by Penguin, ISBN 0140515038), available at Exclusive Books or Wordsworth at around R97 or around R20 secondhand (try secondhand bookshops like CWD in Mowbray 021 6898392).
– A good rhyming dictionary, like Collins Rhyming Dictionary (ISBN 0007209967) around R129 at Exclusive Books or Wordsworth, or the Penguin Rhyming Dictionary (ISBN 0140511369) for around R115 (also available from both stores).
– Please bring your own pen, pencil, eraser and an A4 288-page hardcover “COUNTER BOOK” – R20 at CNA.

REQUIREMENTS

and preferably have basic skills on guitar or piano/keyboard.
2. Non-instrumentalists, who would like to write lyrics only, need to team up with an instrumentalist.
3. You will write two songs during the course, which need to be executed either as a recording by yourself or someone else. Therfore you need access to recording facilities, i.e. a home studio (with a progam like Sound Forge and a microphone), or a professional studio, depending on your budget.
4. If you are a lyricist who do not write or arrange your own music, you will be put in touch with an arranger/composer, who will charge R800 per song. I.e. R500 for the arrangment, and R300 for the recording. The recording does not have to be a professional recording – mistakes are allowed, as long as the words, melody and chord progression can be heard clearly.
5. A broad-band connection is ideal, but not compulsory. Submissions can therefore be sent by snail mail, or in mp3 format by e-mail TO REACH ME BY THE SPECIFIED DATE/TIME.

SHOWCASE
